The aim of this international conference is to discuss, for the first time, some results of basic and clinical research in the fields of attachment, psycho-traumatology and resilience (importance of protective and risk factors in the development of children). Because the results in these scientific fields partly overlap and complement each other, but have not yet been viewed as interacting, the conference is to take the first step in this direction.

Results from attachment research have been successfully transferred to applications in prevention and psychotherapy. It has been shown that attachment disorders are related to traumatic separation and loss experience as well as to other traumatic experiences, such as physical and emotional maltreatment and sexual violence. Attachment research has also shown, how these unresolved traumata can be connected with disorganization in the attachment representations of adults, and with the disorganized behavior of children. It has been convincingly put forward that a transfer of trauma experience from parent to children generations by a specific kind of mother-father-child interaction takes place.

On the other hand, research in psycho-traumatology could prove, in basic and clinical research, that a great number of psycho-pathological symptoms can develop from unresolved traumata. Longitudinal research on resilience and salutogenese concerning protective and risk factors has studied the question of how children can survive acute or chronic traumatization, and which protective factors might contribute to psychic stabilization. Apart from various detailed results, one singular fact has emerged: a secure and important attachment experience during childhood – at least ONE – is an essential protective factor against the development of psycho-pathological symptoms after a traumatic experience.

We are especially indebted to Prof. Dr. Emmy Jacobson-Werner for her groundbreaking findings on the resilience of trauma experience. She carried out research with children after trauma experience on the island of Kauai/Hawaii, and followed the development of these children in a longitudinal study over more than 40 years. This congress is held in her honor, in its progress she will receive the ”Arnold-Lucius-Gesell” prize, donated by the Theodor-Hellbrügge-Stiftung, as an appreciation of her pioneering work as a scientist.
